Don’t drive away in a straight line! To escape a charging MR2, lift of the gas abruptly mid-corner. The MR2 will spin out as it tries to lift as well. Use its mid-engine setup against it to stay safe!

*looks up 2nd gen MR2 horsepower *
I think most cars would be safe in a straight line as well ;)

I spun my dads 92 NA back in 98.. Pulled out of a parking lot like a bad ass through 1st and 2nd and then she showed me the ways of the ass end swap. Zero damage other than my pants but it could have been bad. I crossed 3 lanes backwards.

Yours is NA right? So about 130 hp new and about 2700 pounds? I think I might have a chance.

Ballpark of 2600-2800 lbs. Mine’s got a sunroof instead of T-tops so it might be on the lower end of that range.
It’s pretty heavy due to the iron-block engine. Swap in some aluminum 2.0T from a Lexus and that could save some weight...

Mmm see my MR2 is trained to behave though. It’s the Turbo models out in the wild you have to watch out for, and they look nigh-on identical to the NA.

Turbos have a LSD though... They are real fast on corner exits... little lift off mid corner beforegoing back on gas and you can maintain quite a crazy slip angle with max traction compared to FR cars... I really love them...

NA models have an *exceptional* 130 hp and 144 lb-ft of torque. Truly epic, right?
Actually you want the Turbo, which weighs the same, starts at 200 hp & tq, and is easily boost-able to 300+ reliably.

Do you import lots of Turbo MR2s to the US? I know the later JDM engines make quite a lot of power too.

Proper vehicle right there for sure :D
On a scale of 1 to Amazing, how epic is that to drive?

Yeah they sell like hotbreads honestly... And revision 3 are just becoming legal... They are really good and a lot cheaper than USDM ones... Good rev3 turbo (the 245hp ones) will be around 9-10k$, shipping to the US included...

It’s ridiculous. On the old tires it was very oversteery. With the new Falkens it just goes wherever I point it.
I need to set up a track day for it, for sure. It’s been way too long.
I used to take it to Talladega Grand Prix pretty regularly

If you know how to drive an MR car, you get braking done and are off throttle on corner entry and linearly punch the gas mid-corner .
I like my front-end a bit pointy and have found MR2s to be severely front grip limited vs rear. Softer Dunlop Direzza ZII-Star specs up front (26psi) and BFG g-Force Comp 2s rear (30psi) helps me ; stock 17mm front sway bar, 22mm TRD rear . Feels nice in the tight twisties, but is a compromise in high-speed curves.

I managed to lose the back end of my 2002 MR2 Spyder going through a corner in the rain. I way overcorrected and spun the other way and ended up parked in the bike lane facing the opposite direction about an inch away from the curb with not a scratch on my car and my butt clenched harder than a diamond. I eventually learned some common sense but I’ll never forget that moment of “oh crap, I messed up. ”

Mine is NA... 3.5L V6 NA. Fun bit of kit that 2GR is in an MR2.

You put a 2GR in a MR2. So basically you made an Evora? Sounds like fun.

Having owned a mkii mr2 for about 7 years, and working on the suspension, I can say that it only seems like it wants to kill you if you don’t know what you are doing.
A 30mm stagger, plus the right suspension tuning and you’re good to go.

If you know how to drive it, and it’s set up correctly, it’s no big deal.
